Elena Denisova (Russian Елена Денисова, born February 14, 1963 in Moscow ) is an Austrian violinist and festival director of Russian descent.

Life

Elena Denisova's musical career began with violin lessons at the age of four. The daughter of an earthquake scientist and a transport engineer attended the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory from the age of six and then the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. At the age of eleven, Denisova took part in her first recording. After studying with the violin virtuosos and David Oistrach students Valeri Klimow and Oleg Kagan, she worked as a soloist at the Moscow State Philharmonic until the violinist moved to Austria in 1990. Here she first worked at the Klagenfurt City Theater and at the Carinthian Summer .

Elena Denisova is the founder of the Moscow National Quartet and co-founder of the chamber ensemble Collegium Musicum Carinthia. Together with the conductor and pianist Alexei Kornienko she also founded the Gustav Mahler Ensemble. The ensemble performs at the annual Woerthersee Classics Festival in Klagenfurt, which Denisova has been artistic director since 2002 . After all, Elena Denisova acts as a board member of the Classic Etcetera association founded in 2001.

In parallel to these engagements, Elena Denisova performs concerts, festivals and international tours as a soloist. Among other things, she played at the Flanders Music Festival , the Viennese festivals Hörgangs und Klangbogen , the Ljubljana Festival , the Festival Russian Winter in Moscow, the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, the Austrian Music Weeks in Bulgaria and the Festival Concerti di Primavere in Parma. In 2017 she performed in the Beijing Concert Hall and several times in the Oriental Arts Center in Shanghai, where she last played the New Year's Concert for 2018.

Franz Hummel should be mentioned as an example of the numerous contemporary composers whose works she is premiering . In 2012 Elena Denisova recorded his violin symphony Fukushima , followed in 2016 by the premiere of his second violin concerto Poème in memoriam Max Reger . Hummel also created an orchestral version of Alexander Zemlinsky's Serenade for violin and piano (1895) for her. The composer attests to Denisova a great wealth of nuances, effortlessness and expressiveness.

Finally, Denisova is committed to promoting young talent, for example by teaching at the Austro-American Institute in Vienna and as a jury member at international competitions. Together with various companies, the artist is also involved in the development of new types of violin strings and violins.

The development of unconventional interpretation possibilities is very important to them. With this in mind, her interpretation of Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons attracted particular attention: Denisova played a different violin from Cremona each season . Two Stradivaris , a Francesco Ruggeri and a Guarneri del Gesù were used for the CD recording of the chamber music version . The instruments were made available by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank and have a total value of around 7.2 million euros.

Elena Denisova is married to the conductor and pianist Alexei Kornienko and has one son. The family lives in Vienna.
