The glacier is first shown on New Zealand maps from 1960, which were made from aerial photographs of the United States Navy . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him in 1973 after Robert McLean Behr (1921-2007) of the United States Air Force , who was active as a political advocate for the United States in Antarctica between 1970 and 1971 .
