Beiriz is a place and a former municipality in northern Portugal .

The place is known for its knots and especially its traditional wool carpets, the Tapetes de Beiriz .

history

The village goes back to the Villa Viarizi estate, first mentioned in 1044 .

Until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , Beiriz was a municipality in the district of Barcelos , before it was annexed to Vila do Conde in 1836 . Since 1853 it has belonged to the Póvoa de Varzim district.

With the municipal reorganization in 2013 , the municipalities of Beiriz and Argivai were dissolved and merged with the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim to form the new municipality of Póvoa de Varzim, Beiriz e Argivai .

With the territorial reform in Portugal on September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Beiriz, Argivai and Póvoa de Varzim were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias da Póvoa de Varzim, Beiriz e Argivai . Póvoa de Varzim became the new seat of the municipality, while the previous municipal administrations in Beiriz and Argivai remained as citizens' offices.
