The Aqueduto de Santa Clara in the municipality

history

Finds here indicate the existence of a Roman villa . In the year 953 a deed of donation shows the independent municipality of São Miguel de Argivai as an area that u. a. the present town of Póvoa de Varzim and the present municipality of Argivai included. In the royal registers from 1220, the area is described as far as the Atlantic .

In the early 18th century, the Aqueduto de Santa Clara was completed, which with its 999 arches ran through large parts of the municipality of Argivai.

The community lost several areas in various administrative reforms and thereby steadily lost importance. Until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , Argivai was a municipality in the Barcelos district , and since 1836 it has belonged to Póvoa de Varzim. In 1842 the municipality of Argivai was completely dissolved and part of the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim until it regained its independence in 1853.

With the municipal reorganization in 2013 , the municipalities of Argivai and Beiriz were dissolved and merged with the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim to form the new municipality of Póvoa de Varzim, Beiriz e Argivai .
