The truck BelAZ-540 ( Russian БелАЗ-540 , German transcription actually BelAS-540) is a large dump truck from the Soviet vehicle manufacturer BelAZ , which was built from 1961. The GDR also imported the machines and used them particularly in mining.

As early as 1961, BelAZ built the first BelAZ-540 dump truck, which was supposed to replace the MAZ-525 . The built-in twelve-cylinder with 39 l displacement was originally developed for tanks by the Soviet Union during World War II and was already used in the predecessor. Like its predecessors, the BelAZ-540 was also directly driven by the diesel engine installed in the front via a normal clutch and a manual transmission. Problems with this technology already arose in the previous generation of the vehicle due to the high overall weight. Today hydraulic drive systems or diesel-electric drives are used for particularly heavy vehicles such as large dump trucks . A new feature of the BelAZ-540 compared to its predecessors, however, was that the vehicle had suspension. In 1962, BelAZ also built a prototype of a tractor unit with a tipping trailer under the name BelAZ-540B .

The new model went into series production around 1965. As early as 1967, the extremely inefficient diesel engine was replaced by the more modern type JaMZ-240 from the Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod . With significantly less displacement, it developed 360 hp (265 kW). The vehicles with this engine were called BelAZ-540A and were produced in series until 1985. The successors were the BelAZ-7522 and BelAZ-7526 models.

The GDR imported a total of 322 of these vehicles from 1966 to 1985 in order to use them in mining. As with earlier models, attempts were made to equip the dump trucks with an electric motor and power supply via overhead lines. But the plans were rejected.

The BelAZ-548 was built in parallel with the BelAZ-540 . The models are very similar, but the BelAZ-548 was able to load 40 tons of material.

In 1967 the toy manufacturer Rolf Funke built a model of the BelAZ-540. In 1971 the Soviet Post dedicated a stamp to the truck.
