Scientists from the Norwegian Polar Institute named it in 2016 based on the name of the neighboring mountain group. It is named after the Belgica , ship of the Antarctic expedition of the same name from 1897 to 1899 under the direction of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery .
