Belhar is a district of the Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality in the Western Cape Province , South Africa . It is located east of the city center of Cape Town on the northern edge of the Cape Flats . According to the 2011 census, 56,234 people live in Belhar.

The settlement became known through the Belhar Confession . In October 1982 the general synod of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Sendingskerk (NGSK), at that time a Church of the Colored , met in Belhar. At the synod a draft of a confession with statements for unity, reconciliation and justice in South African society was presented by a small group of Christians. They called on their church to take a critical stance against the unjust division of society in view of the apartheid situation.

Immediately north of Belhar is the main campus of the University of the Western Cape (UWC), to the north of which is the Bellville district . To the south is the Delft district , to the southwest of Cape Town International Airport . Local trains of the Metrorail Cape Town , which serve Belhar and the UWC with several stations, run along the northern edge of Belhar.
