Belinda Stronach (born May 2, 1966 in Newmarket , Ontario ) is a Canadian businesswoman and politician . She is the daughter of the Austrian - Canadian industrialist , billionaire and former politician , Frank Stronach .

Career

Belinda Stronach is the daughter of Frank Stronach , founder of Magna International , a subcontracting company for the automotive industry based in Aurora, Ontario , north of Toronto. Her mother's name is Elfriede (nee Sallmother).

She studied at York University for a year, then dropped out to work at Magna. She speaks English and German. At Magna, she sat on the board of directors from 1988 to 2004 and also worked in management. From February 2001 to December 31, 2010 Stronach was a member of the supervisory board and deputy chairwoman of the board of Magna International.

politics

Belinda Stronach applied in January 2004 for the chairmanship of the newly formed Conservative Party and landed behind Stephen Harper in second place. In the election to the Canadian federal parliament on June 28, 2004, she won the seat in the Newmarket-Aurora district as a conservative candidate by a narrow margin.

On May 17, 2005, she switched to the Liberal Party and was immediately appointed by Prime Minister Paul Martin as the Canadian Minister for State Personnel ( Ministry of Human Resources and Skills Development ).

In the parliamentary elections on January 23, 2006, the Liberals lost the government majority, but Stronach was able to defend their parliamentary seat - now for the Liberals. Then she was considered a possible successor to the resigned Paul Martin as party leader of the Liberals, but renounced in April 2006 on a candidacy. On April 11, 2007, Ms. Stronach announced her intention to return to the management of Magna International and not stand in the next general election.

family

Stronach is divorced twice. Her first husband, Donald J. Walker , served on the management of Magna International. From this marriage they have two children, Frank and Nikki. From 1999 to 2003 she was married to the Norwegian speed skating legend Johann Olav Koss .

At the end of 2018 there was a falling out between Belinda Stronach on the one hand and her father and brother on the other, who sued her in Canada for hundreds of millions of dollars in damages for bad investments by the Stronach Group.
