Bella Maddo is a short film released in 2010 directed by Janice Danielle . It is the first film whose entire cast consists of transsexuals . The film was shown at the Cannes International Film Festival in the Short Film Corner and at the Outfest Film Festival in the USA.

action

The drama is about Bella, a pregnant sociopath who suffers from her slimming mania and neglects that of her young daughter Angelica and that of her unborn child.

background

The cast consists entirely of transsexuals who play non- transsexual characters. This should enable transgenders to play roles that are not assigned to a sexual milieu.

The cast includes Miss Jazz , who is only nine years old, and model Isis King .

Janice expanded the film into an 8-part mini-series. Future directing projects for her include a film that should be completely cast with trans children.

Reviews

In an extensive recession by Jennie Kermode , it is said that the short film had to go a very fine line to balance melodrama and comedy while sincerely dealing with the real issues. Thanks to the strong performance of director and leading actress Janice Danielle, Bella Maddo could perfectly draw this line. The film has some problems elsewhere, however, with a shaky plot and an ending that leaves the really tough questions aside. Bella Maddo is a film made up entirely of transgender people. All play non-transgender and consciously avoid the stereotypes that transgender characters otherwise routinely revolve around. Aside from its political importance, Danielle's approach is important because when you learn to live in a different gender role than the one you grew up in, you can often see very well how many aspects of gender are in the nature of theater. This underscores Bella's strange need to be thin and glamorous despite having a husband who loves her for who she is. The viewer can see how dangerous it is if you only pay attention to the appearance.
