In the early 1990s, she constructed and installed large-scale environmental works mainly from natural materials, which are intended to mediate between the raw and the processed state or between nature and culture. In these works and in the accompanying drawings and paintings, Shafir questions the internal structural logic of natural formations.

During the 2000s, the focus of her works shifted to indoor installations, in which the physical and the imaginary are supposed to be almost inextricably intertwined. Small units are grouped together to represent complex systems patterned with deep structures. The echo of life alludes in her work to hidden processes, to the secret creation of real worlds that lie between the poles of integration and disorientation, growth and destruction, construction and omission.

Shafir explores the traces of memory in nature. In recent years, current developments on mutation, genetics and cloning have been integrated into her work.
