Bellerophon class (vase painting)
The Bellerophon class is a special form of Attic amphorae of the black-figure style from the third quarter of the 6th century BC from the workshop of Nikosthenes . Chr. Designated. The amphora of the Bellerophon class is a particularly compact form of this type of vase.
The class was named after an amphora (inventory number 50735) in the Villa Giulia in Rome , which the BMN painter painted. He is considered the most important and creative representative of a group of artists who decorated this amphora shape. On the eponymous vase of the BMN painter, Bellerophon is depicted, coming from one side of the amphora, attacking the chimera on the opposite side.
