Bellona (Kolbe)
Bellona is a statue of bronze , which from 1914 to 1922 by the sculptor Georg Kolbe was designed and implemented.
history
The bronze double figure was designed in 1914–1917 by the sculptor Georg Kolbe . Bellona , the goddess of war of the Roman religion , offers the sword to an awakening warrior in the statue. The bronze figure was set up in September 1922 as part of a fountain with a round basin and a flat limestone bowl in a small green area in front of the home of the President of the Elberfeld Railway Directorate . The villa with the address Döppersberg 35 and 35A existed on the eastern side of the station forecourt until it was destroyed by the air raids on Elberfeld in 1943 .
The Kolbes ensemble was called Elberfelder Brunnen ; his design had emerged as the winner of a competition for a planned well. However, the size, shape and iconography of the fountain changed several times. Due to the war and the economy, casting and installation were delayed until 1922. The total cost was 47,000 marks.
In 1949 the bowl and sculpture were moved to their current location on the lawn of the casino garden , but the bowl was later removed in favor of a cubic base.
