Belvedere (vodka)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Belvedere is a Polish vodka brand that has been part of the multinational luxury conglomerate Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton since 2005 . It is named after the Warsaw Belvedere Palace , which was the model for the style of the country estate of countless Polish nobles and is now the residence of the Polish President .

history

In 1910 the Polmos Żyrardów distillery was founded, which continued its production during the two world wars. After the fall of the communist regime in 1989, Polmos Żyrardów then intended to bring its own branded vodka onto the market. This vodka was named after the Belvedere Palace in Warsaw , which served countless Polish noblemen as a model for their country estate and is now the residence of the Polish President .

Until the 1990s, however, the Belvedere remained a regional spirit that was hardly known abroad. This only changed in 1997 when Edward Jay Phillips traveled to Europe from the USA, acquired the distribution rights for his country and supplied the US vodka market with Belvedere through his Millennium Import Company .

Finally, in 2002, the Belvedere received the interest of the multinational luxury conglomerate Moët Hennessy , which in 2005 bought the Millennium Import Company, and with it the international distribution rights for the Belvedere brand. Since then, Belvedere has been sold with its own depot in at least 100 countries, including the varieties Belvedere Vodka, Belvedere Unfiltered and Belvedere Intense, as well as the fruity derivatives Belvedere Citrus, Orange, Pink Grapefruit, Black Raspberry, Lemon Tea, Bloody Mary and Mango Passion .

In December 2014, it was announced in a joint press release with Albert R. Broccoli's EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment that Belvedere is sponsoring the 24th James Bond film Specter and will be issuing two limited editions for it.

Manufacturing and bottling

The vodka is made from Polish "Dankowskie Gold" rye from the area around Żyrardów , Masovian Voivodeship , and is distilled a total of four times. The water required for production comes from the company's own Artesian well . The alcohol content is 40 percent.

The Belvedere is bottled with multi-colored labeling in bottles of 0.7 to 6 liters. The company uses a presentation technique known from exhibition design: on the inside there is a diorama through which the silhouette of the Belvedere Palace can be recognized. By correctly changing the scale from the foreground to the background of the bottle, an almost perfect illusion of spatial depth and closeness to reality can be achieved - a kind of three-dimensional trompe-l'oeil painting that makes the viewer look at the palace like a giant.

Awards

Since 2009, the Belvedere has received over 45 medals, master awards and trophies, presented by the International Spirits Challenge, the 50 best Vodka Awards and the Spirits Business' Vodka Masters in the categories Eastern Europe, Design & Packaging, Taste, Softness and Super Premium. In 2013 the ISC Awards awarded the Belvedere the Grand Master for "consistency in excellence" in recognition of the fact that it has now received more awards than any other brand since the Vodka Masters was founded in 2009. In September 2014, Proof66, classified aggregator various international rating agencies, the Belvedere as a "series 2" spirit.

criticism

On March 23, 2012, the Belvedere Twitter and Facebook pages posted a vodka brand image that was heavily criticized for the apparently portrayed rape (the image featured a man jokingly taming a woman who made it appear that she would like to flee) as well as for the slogan Unlike Some People, Belvedere Always Goes Down Smoothly (unlike some people, Belvedere goes down without difficulty). The picture was published there for approximately 45 minutes before it was withdrawn.

During an investigation on behalf of Swiss TV RTS on May 6, 2014, the Eurofins Scientific group of laboratories discovered that there is sugar cane or grain in the Belvedere, although Belvedere's labeling only mentions rye and alcohol.
