Ben Thompson (born November 2, 1843 in Knottingley , West Yorkshire , United Kingdom , † March 11, 1884 in San Antonio , Texas ) was a gunslinger, gambler and sometimes lawman of the Old West.

Like his younger brother William Thompson , Ben Thompson was a well-known classic gunslinger in the American Wild West in the second half of the 19th century . He was also a contemporary of Buffalo Bill ( William Frederick Cody ), Bat Masterson , John Wesley Hardin, and Wild Bill Hickock , some of whom viewed him as a friend and others as an enemy. Thompson fought for the Confederation during the Civil War and later for Emperor Maximilian in Mexico . When he was hired as Marshal in Austin , Texas in 1881 , the crime rate dropped sharply. Thompson was murdered at the age of 40 in San Antonio , Texas in the "Vaudeville Theater Ambush".
