Benderer Lenten cloth in the parish church of Bendern (around 1900)

The Bender fasting cloth is an early baroque fasting cloth of the "field type" and is one of the few remaining fasting cloths. It originally hung in the parish church of Bendern , Liechtenstein . Today it is exhibited in the Liechtenstein National Museum in Vaduz .

history

The early baroque Lenten cloth of the parish church in Bendern dates from 1612 and is one of the few surviving Lenten cloths. The monogram "IGC" it contains may be that of the Feldkirch painter Johann Georg Clessin (* around 1580, † before 1619), but it has not been clarified. The cloth disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century and was rediscovered in the parish stable in 1947. Pastor Schlatter von Bendern at the time cleaned the cloth and hung it up again during Lent. On the initiative of the historical association, the Lenten veil, which is valuable from a cultural point of view, was restored in Vienna in 1971 and then exhibited in the Liechtenstein National Museum. In 1983 a copy of the Lent Shawl was made, which is hung up every year during Lent in the church in Bendern.

description

The fasting cloth is a 6.3 × 4.7 m large linen cloth with a total area of 29.6 m². It is a specimen of the Felder type, which was widespread in the Alpine region between the 15th and 17th centuries. The cloth consists of 24 picture fields, which are arranged in four rows of six scenes each divided by columns. In contrast to the Balzerser Lenten Cloth, the Benderer Lenten cloth covers the entire sanctuary and not each altar individually.

The top row of pictures depicts scenes from creation to the erection of the brazen serpent by Moses. The following series of images depict the story of Jesus, which ends with the Ascension of Christ, Pentecost and the Last Judgment:

Creation of Eve , Fall of Man Noah's Ark Isaac offering Feeding in the desert Legislation on the Sinai Copper snake
Annunciation to Mary Birth of Christ clipping Adoration of the Magi Entry into Jerusalem Last Supper
Christ on the Mount of Olives Capture Flagellation Crowning of thorns Ecce homo Carrying the Cross
crucifixion Entombment resurrection Ascension Outpouring of the Holy Spirit Last Judgment
