The Maria Visitation Abbey was a Benedictine nunnery in the Steinfeld district of the municipality of Kall / Eifel in the immediate vicinity of the Steinfeld monastery . A church and a guest house with 20 rooms belonged to the abbey . The abbey existed from 1955 to 2019.

history

The abbey was founded in 1955 by German nuns from the Belgian Benedictine priory of Notre-Dame in Ermeton-sur-Biert . In search of a suitable house, the Benedictine nuns acquired the Albermann house in Kall-Steinfeld , a country house with a park built in the 19th century. In 1958/1959 the house was converted into a monastery and a church was added. The guest house was inaugurated in 1986.

On July 16, 2018, the sisters announced that they intend to move to an old-fashioned monastery on the Venusberg in Bonn in the first half of 2019 . They said goodbye to Steinfeld in a service with the Aachen Bishop Helmut Jetzt on March 31, 2019, Sunday Laetare . On July 1, 2019, the guest house was taken over by Kloster Steinfeld GmbH & Co. KG of the neighboring Salvatorian monastery as "Haus St. Benedikt".

Life and work

The Benedictine Sisters lived according to the Rule of St. Benedict of Nursia (480-547) "under the leadership of the Gospel" and thus stood in the tradition of Western monasticism . Their self-image was also based on the ideal of the founder, a monk of the Belgian Abbey of Maredsous near Namur , Dom Eugène Vandeur OSB (1875–1967), whose aim was to open the monastic liturgy to the participation of lay people .

The nuns offered individual and group retreats and faith seminars in their guest house , as well as temporary participation in prayer and community work. In addition to the seminars, candles and incense were made in monastery workshops.
