Belecke Benedictine Provosty
The Belecke Benedictine Provosty was a founding of the Grafschaft monastery in the 13th century. It housed a provost whose main task was choir prayer. In 1804 the provost's office was abolished in the course of secularization . The Propsteig building was then used as the pastor's apartment.
History and Development
Kloster Grafschaft had property and tithe income in Belecke since the 11th century. A provost in Belecke can be documented for the first time in 1244. In 1270 the abbot of the monastery was granted the right to occupy the provost's office. In this context, the “prepositura Belike” is mentioned for the first time.
During most of its existence, lived and worked in the Provost's just a provost. Only around 1628 was a chaplain assigned to him . The provost sent from the ranks of Kloster Grafschaft usually retained his position until the end of his life. Around 1800 he received income from around 300 acres of land, some of which were used for self-cultivation and some of which were leased in plots.
The provost performed the choir prayers in his house chapel, the so-called prelate chapel. He celebrated this prayer on Sundays and public holidays with the support of six lay choirs in the parish church.
On March 1, 1804, the provost's office was abolished by the new Hessian rulers. The church belonging to the provost remained the parish church. The provost's office served as the pastor's apartment. Four years later the Propsteihaus burned down. Large parts of the provost's archives were also destroyed. Then the building was rebuilt as a rectory. The remains of the archive have been in the parish archive in Belecke ever since. Part of the library ended up in the Archbishop's Academic Library in Paderborn.
