The Benediktweg connects the federal states of Upper Austria , Styria and Carinthia as well as the Benedictine centers of Admont , Seckau and Sankt Paul im Lavanttal . It covers a total of 256 km, divided into 11 daily stages, with the first 3 daily stages also offering alternative routes as the mountain routes are not always accessible due to the weather.

The path is named after the founder of the order, Benedict of Nursia . The crosses that adorn the church towers of Spital am Pyhrn and Sankt Paul im Lavanttal bear his motto: " Crux Sancta Sit Mihi Lux, Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux " ( the holy cross be light to me, not the dragon / evil be me Guide ). The former canon monastery Spital am Pyhrn was the starting point of those Benedictine monks who in 1809 repopulated the St. Paul monastery in Lavanttal , which was abolished by Emperor Joseph II , and made it a spiritual and cultural center in the Carinthian-Slovenian border region.

history

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the resettlement of the St. Paul Abbey in Lavanttal, the Benediktweg pilgrimage route from Spital am Pyhrn to St. Paul was established in 2009. In 2011 the Benediktweg was extended to Slovenia to the former Benedictine monastery Gornji Grad and is under the patronage of Stanislav Lipovšek , Bishop of Celje, and the Slovenian MP Matjaž Zanoškar (Slovenj Gradec).
