Benedito Novo is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Santa Catarina . According to official estimates, it had 11,526 inhabitants in 2018. The place is on the BR-477 national road .
Surname
The place derives its name from the river of the same name, Rio Benedito , which was considered “blessed” ( benedito ) because of its abundance of fish . That is why the place was then called Benedito Novo or Beneditto Novo or Benedicto Novo.
history
The area of today's municipality of Novo Benedito was colonized by Frederico Donner, who, after founding the city of Timbó, drove up the Rio Benedito and built some branches. The early settlers in the region were Germans from Saxony, Mecklenburg, Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and Baden, who settled there from 1876 to 1891. Thus, the actual foundation of the place can be set to the 1880s.
In 1922 the newly created Benedito-Timbó district was incorporated into the Blumenau community . In 1961 Benedito Novo was raised to an independent administrative municipality.
