Benedykt Dybowski
Benedykt Tadeusz Dybowski (born May 12, 1833 in Adamaryn in Ujesd Novogrudok , Minsk Governorate ; † January 31, 1930 in Lemberg ) was a Russian- Polish naturalist and doctor .

Benedykt Dybowski studied medicine at the Universities of Dorpat (Tartu) and Breslau , later palaeontology, botany and medicine in Berlin , and went on expeditions to research oceanic fish and crustaceans. He was appointed professor of zoology at Szkoła Główna Warszawska in Warsaw .
In 1864 he was arrested for participating in the Polish January uprising and sentenced to death. His sentence was later reduced to 12 years of hard labor in Siberia .
Dybowski began studying the natural history of Siberia. In 1866, Governor Muravyov released him from forced labor, renewed his civil rights and suggested that he work as a doctor in the hospital. He settled in the small village of Kultuk and began detailed exploration of Lake Baikal with technical assistance from the Russian Geographical Society . From 1879 he undertook various expeditions to Sakhalin and Kamchatka and continued to practice his medical profession on these occasions.
In 1927 the Academy of Sciences of the USSR declared Dybowski a member. In 1921 Dybowski received an honorary doctorate from the University of Warsaw and in 1923 from the University of Vilnius . The Ukrainian Shevchenko Society congratulated him on his 95th birthday .
Dybowski died at the age of 97. He is buried in Lviv in the Łyczakowski Cemetery, along with other participants in the Polish uprising of 1863.

" Gammaracanthuskytodermogammarus loricatobaicalensis ", a flea cancer allegedly native to Lake Baikal and named by Dybowski, was once the longest scientific name. However, according to the International Rules for Zoological Nomenclature, this name is invalid.
