The Bengaluru Metro or Namma Metro ( Kannada : ನಮ್ಮ ಮೆಟ್ರೊ "our metro") is the subway in the Indian city of Bengaluru, formerly Bangalore . It opened in October 2011. This makes it the third subway in India after the Kolkata Metro (opened in 1984) and the Delhi Metro (opened in 2002). The first expansion phase was completed in June 2017. The Bangaluru Metro has two lines with a length of 42.3 kilometers (33.5 kilometers above ground and 8.8 kilometers in the tunnel) and 40 stations.

history

The planning for the metro began because the city's infrastructure could hardly keep up with the rapid population growth of the now megacity. The building of a high-performance subway network is intended to limit the increasing traffic congestion and increasing air pollution. On June 24, 2006, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for the metro. Actual construction began on April 15, 2007.

On October 20, 2011, the first section of the purple line between Byappanahalli and MG Road was opened. The first section of the green line between Peenya Industry and Sampige Road went into operation on March 1, 2014. On May 1, 2015, it was extended from Peenya Industry to Nagasandra . On November 16, 2015, a second section of the purple line followed between Mysore Road and Magadi Road . With the opening of the underground section between Magadi Road and Mahatma Gandhi Road on April 29, 2016, the gap in the purple line was closed. On June 17, 2017, the section of the green line from Sampige Road to Yelachenahalli was finally opened. This completes the entire expansion phase of the Bangalore metro.

Construction work for the second expansion phase began in September 2017.

It provides for an extension of the existing routes and two new lines: the existing purple line is to be extended to Whitefield in the east and Kengeri in the west and the green line to the Bangalore International Exhibition Center in the north and Anjapura in the south.
