Benington Castle
Benington Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Benington near Stevenage in the English county of Hertfordshire . It is a Scheduled Monument and English Heritage has listed it as a Grade I Historic Building.
The castle was built as a moth fortress at the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century at the behest of Peter de Valoignes . In 1136 Roger de Valoignes had a stone castle with a donjon built. In 1177 King Henry II ordered the tower to be destroyed, but in 1192 the castle was restored. In 1212, Benington Castle was finally destroyed after Robert FitzWalter rebelled against King John Ohneland .
Only the foundations of the donjon and some earthworks have survived to this day. In 1832 George Proctor had a nine-man gatehouse , summer house, and curtain wall added.
