Benito Medero

Benito Medero Sorhuet , called "Betín" by his confidants, (* 1922 in Flores Department , † February 14, 2007 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan politician .

Medero belonged to the Partido Nacional . From 1954 to 1955 he held the office of Intendente in his home department of Flores, where he worked as an estanciero . In the 1950s, together with Alberto Gallinal Heber , Carlos Frick Davie and Carlos Pereira Iraola, he founded the Sociedad de Praderas , a voluntary society that was concerned with increasing the productivity of the Uruguayan pastureland. In the following decade, using New Zealand technology and with support from the World Bank , he created and directed the Plan Agropecuario with the same objective. From 1962 to 1964 he was President of the Asociación Rural del Uruguay . Between 1963 and 1964 he sat in the Concejal Departamental and was chairman of it in the 1960s. In the following period he was elected as a member of the Cámara de Representantes , the House of Representatives of Uruguay, from Flores , where he was elected from February 15, 1967 to September 11, 1969. He was later appointed by President Juan María Bordaberry , whose good personal friend he was, from March 1, 1972 to December 3, 1974, as Minister of Agriculture of Uruguay. For a while, Medero was also Minister of Defense.

He was married to Julieta Ranzini Puig and had three sons and three daughters with her. His daughter Rosario Medero is also active as a politician and ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Senate in 1999. Medero was buried on February 15, 2007 at the Cementerio de Trinidad .
