Benjamin Lacayo Sacasa

Benjamín Lacayo Sacasa (born June 27, 1893 in Granada (Nicaragua) ; † April 4, 1959 ) was President of Nicaragua from May 26 to August 15, 1947 .

Life

His parents were Encarnación Sacasa Cuadra and Daniel Lacayo Bermúdez. His sister was Angela Sacasa Cuadra, who was married to her nephew Roberto Sacasa Sarria.

He studied law and worked as a notary. Benjamín Lacayo Sacasa was a member of the Partido Liberal Nacionalista . Somoza had the parliament declare Leonardo Argüello Barreto incapable and appoint Benjamin Lacayo Sacasa as president. Benjamín Lacayo Sacasa was not recognized by the US government, nor by any Central American government, nor by the Organization of American States . He was known in parliament and among the population as the Muñeca gorda (fat puppet ) of Somoza. On July 5, 1947, Benjamin Lacayo Sacasa, on instructions from Somoza García, decreed that the main party leaders of the Partido Socialista Nicaragüense on Ometepe would belong to a strange political group, which were prohibited by the constitution. On August 3, 1947, a new constituent assembly was elected. Less than ten percent of the population took part in the constituent assembly election. On the day the Constituent Assembly met, it elected Víctor Manuel Román y Reyes, a nephew of Anastasio Somoza Reyes, father of Anastasio Somoza García . Benjamín Lacayo Sacasa had previously resigned. Under Víctor Manuel Román y Reyes, Benjamín Lacayo Sacasa became Minister for Development and Public Works.
