Benjamin Peled (* 1928 in Tel Aviv as Binyamin Weidenfeld ; † July 13, 2002 ) was the eighth commander of the Israeli Air Force (IAF).

Life

Peled began his career in 1946 in the Jewish settler police in the British Mandate for Palestine . From 1947 he began to study engineering, which he broke off in favor of his army career. He served as an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force before completing his flying training in 1948. This was followed by a combat mission as a pilot in the 1st Combat Squadron in the Palestine War . In 1952 and 1954 he was trained in Great Britain and France as a pilot for the guidance of jet jets such as the Gloster Meteor . He then became the squadron commander of such a fighter jet unit. His plane was shot down during the Suez Crisis , but Peled was able to save himself with the ejector seat and was later rescued by an Israeli plane. He then studied aviation until 1962.

During the 1960s he was employed as chief of the IAF's training department and base commander. In 1969 he changed briefly to the company management of Israel Aerospace Industries . In May 1973 he took over the leadership of the IAF with the rank of Aluf ( major general ) . He also held this role during the Yom Kippur War . Peled practiced his activity until October 1977, before he was replaced by David Ivry .

He was then Managing Director of Elbit Systems from 1978 to 1985 . Peled died in 2002 at the age of 74.
