Seefliegerhorst Schleswig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schleswig Seefliegerhorst was built from 1935 in Schleswig on the Auf der Freiheit peninsula for the Wehrmacht's air force as a new barracks.

history

The area from the spar to the shipyard in Klensby was planned in such a way that six companies could be trained and flight operations could be carried out with seaplanes .

The topping-out ceremony for the barracks took place on August 17, 1935. On October 1, 1935, the first recruits of the newly established Flieger-Ersatz -teilung 16 (See) (Fl.-Ers.Abt. 16) - moved into the new barracks. The first air base commander of the Schleswig Sea Air Base Command was Colonel Hugo Schmidt.

The following units were subordinate to the Seefliegerhorst Command :

  • the Schleswig blind flight school
  • the Borgstedter Enge airfield
  • the Schuby fake airport
  • an air force training regiment
  • the music corps of the Seefliegerhorst-Kommandantur
  • the "Gut Falkenberg" practice area

The flying training for beginners took place on the Schlei in one of the Fl.-Ers.Abt. 16 subordinate school, which in 1936 relocated its flight operations to the Borgstedter Enge airfield. After the school was relocated, a blind flight course was set up in the Seefliegerhorst itself, in which models such as the Heinkel He 42 , Heinkel He 59 , Heinkel He 60 , Dornier Wal and Junkers W 34 were used. The Blind Flight School Schleswig, founded in June 1938 and commanded by Captain von Glasow, emerged from this blind flight course. The blind flight school existed until October 1939.

To the east of the barracks on the Kleine Breite der Schlei , a large hall for seaplanes with a runway to the Schlei was built in 1935/36, where aircraft repairs and major overhauls were carried out.

In 1937 the Fl.-Ers.Abt. 16 was renamed Flieger-Bataillon 16 See , in 1940 it was incorporated into Flieger-Regiment 16 See and in 1942 into the 5th Air Force Division.

At the end of World War II , the 83rd Group of the Royal Air Force took over the area and set up their headquarters there, Caterham Barracks . With the clearance of the area and the aircraft hangar by the occupying forces in the second half of April 1953, the construction of a sugar factory became possible. From 1956 the Bundeswehr occupied the barracks Auf der Freiheit u. a. with the Panzer Grenadier Company 13 and the Light Pioneer Equipment Company 761. In 2003 the barracks were given up.
