Life and political career

Benjamin de Guzman was born in Caraga in 1945 to Segundo De Guzman and Hipolita Cacatian. He studied law at Ateneo de Davao University and graduated in 1969. The following year he became a member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines. He initially worked as a legal advisor with the Davao City local government. From 1975 to 1987, de Guzman lectured as a professor of law at the Ateneo de Davao University. From 1978 to 1988 he was a partner in the law firm Garcia, Iñigo, De Guzman . From 1998 to 1995 he was employed as head of the Davao City council. In addition, de Guzman attended courses in the United States in 1988 and 1993 to gain further training in government administration and local politics. Benjamin de Guzman was elected vice mayor in the 1995 elections, and finally mayor of Davao City three years later. He held this office for a period of government from 1998 to 2001, but a re-election in 2001 failed because of Rodrigo Duterte , who after a legislative period as a representative in Congress pushed back into local politics and received a clear majority from the voters. In another attempt to regain the mayor's office, de Guzman lost again to Rodrigo Duterte in the 2004 election.

In the elections in May 2010 , de Guzman ran in a team with the mayoral candidate Prospero Nograles for the seat of the deputy mayor. With the election slogan change we must, change we need , which roughly means in German that a change is necessary, the two tried to win the offices in the city hall, but were subject to the Duterte duo at both posts .
