The Berberskink ( Eumeces schneideri , Syn .: Novoeumeces schneideri ), also called Schneider's Skink , is a species of lizard that is widespread from northwest Africa to northwest India. It was named after the German naturalist Johann Gottlob Theaenus Schneider .

distribution

The distribution area extends from Algeria through Tunisia, Libya and Egypt to Anatolia , Saudi Arabia , Dagestan , Uzbekistan , Tajikistan and northwest India. Berber skink is also found in Cyprus .

features

The Berber skink reaches a total length of 32 to 47 cm , depending on the subspecies . Its body is cylindrical, its legs short and stocky. The basic color of the lizards is brownish, the sides are more yellowish, the belly yellowish or dirty white. On the back and flanks of the lizards there are orange-red spots or yellow, black-edged scales, irregularly or in rows. The ear openings can be closed when digging in the ground.

Way of life

The Berber skink occurs in semi-deserts and in dry cultivated land. He is diurnal and hides under stones and bushes at night. Insects, spiders, shell snails and parts of plants serve as food.

During the mating season, they are territorial and aggressive towards one another. Females are pursued by the male and their willingness to mate is checked by licking in the sewer area. Five to six weeks after mating, the female lays three to twenty eggs in a slightly moist place. The young kinks hatch after 8 to 9 weeks. Unlike the full-grown Berber hamsters, they are gray-brown to olive-gray in color and have 8 to 10 longitudinal rows of white dots. The orange stripe on the sides of the body is missing.
