François-Marie Daudin (born August 29, 1776 in Paris , † November 30, 1803 there ) was a French zoologist .

Live and act

Daudin was paralyzed from childhood and turned to the study of natural history. He died early of tuberculosis.

Daudin wrote an introduction to ornithology, Traité élémentaire et complet d'ornithologie (1800, 2 volumes) and his Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière des reptiles ( 1802 - 05 , 8 volumes) as part of the Sonnini edition of Buffon's natural history Standard work and at its time the most complete work on reptiles. According to his own statements, he described 517 species based on 1100 specimens, including some initial descriptions (55 species of reptiles alone). These were three times more species than in the previously published work by Bernard Germain Lacépède .

Dedication names

Le Guêpier Daudin

André Marie Constant Duméril and Gabriel Bibron named a turtle species Testudo daudinii in 1835 , which is now listed in the Seychelles as an extinct subspecies of the Aldabra giant tortoise ( Aldabrachelys gigantea daudinii ) . In 1807, François Levaillant (1753-1824) named the blue- tailed pint ( Merops philippinus ) Le Guêpier Daudin in honor of Daudin. In 1973 Bertha Lutz named a species of frog Hyla daudini , a name that is now a synonym for Hypsiboas boans . She gave the name because, from her point of view, Daudin had misused the name Hyla Boans in 1802 . The species Colobus Daudini (in Daudin Chalcides monodactylus ) described by Blasius Merrem in 1820 is a synonym for Bachia flavescens ( Bonnaterre , 1789).
