history

The history of Diakonie goes back to the refuge for women in Elberfeld , which was founded in 1882 by the prison pastor Carl Heinersdorff (1836–1914) , which was financed with donations from wealthy families and which quickly became very popular. Around 1900 a home for the elderly and women was set up, later also a home for drinkers and drug addicts. From 1901 onwards, supporting children was also the task of the institution. In 1908 the Eigen estate near Aprath was acquired, which is the center of the facility today. In 1910 the first reform home was inaugurated there. Gradually, numerous other institutions were established there and in nearby places. On September 28, 1917, the deaconess mother house was founded with 13 sisters and the superior. The Birke House facility, which has existed since August 4, 1993, helps and cares for chronically alcoholic people.

In 2017, the departments of youth and family, children, education, school and outpatient assisted living for people with mental health problems and addictions as well as debtor and insolvency advice, homeless assistance and assisted living moved into the "Velberter Stadthaus".
