The Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies (BTS) is a joint project of the Free University of Berlin , the Hertie School of Governance and the Berlin Science Center . It serves as a scientific platform that brings together research in the field of transnational and international relations . In this subject area, BTS offers an English-language PhD program. Graduates in political science and related disciplines such as history, economics and law are eligible.

PhD program in Transnational Studies

The PhD program at BTS lasts three years and ends with the completion of the PhD thesis as part of the structured doctoral scholarship. The curriculum during the studies consists on the one hand of writing the dissertation and on the other hand of participating in survey courses, colloquias and workshops in the field of research methodology.

A supervisor is assigned to each PhD candidate during their studies. In addition, two additional supervisors can be acquired independently. While the first supervisor has to be a member of the BTS Faculty, second and third supervisors can also be chosen from an external university. In addition to working independently on the dissertation, regular seminars on scientific methods and professional opportunities in science are a compulsory part of the BTS curriculum.
