The Berliner Glas KGaA Herbert Kubatz GmbH & Co. is a manufacturer of optical key components, assemblies and systems as well as refined technical glass, headquartered in Berlin . The company develops, manufactures and integrates optics , mechanics and electronics into system solutions. These solutions are used in medicine , the semiconductor industry , measurement technology , laser and space technology as well as in the display industry. The Berliner Glas Group consists of companies that have been developing and manufacturing optical solutions for more than 100 years. The company with more than 1,600 employees (as of December 31, 2019) and sales of around EUR 229 million (as of December 31, 2019) has production sites in Germany , Switzerland and the People's Republic of China .

history

The company's history goes back to 1952, when Herbert Kubatz's father founded the company called Berliner Glas in Berlin. Seven years later he founded the first subsidiary of the same name in Schwäbisch Hall . During this time the company produced slide glasses and microscope slides in series.

In the course of the 1960s, glass processing was set up under the heading "Technical Glasses". After the first simple products such as glass for gas and water meters as well as for heating systems, it was possible to win customers with higher requirements. Here are e.g. B. to name manufacturers of photocopiers. In addition to the photocopiers, the technical glasses from Berliner Glas were also used in fax machines, overhead projectors, LCD displays for clocks and in many other technical devices. In 1970 the transition to precision optics took place. The manufacture of optical components is completely different from flat glass processing. Now, more and more high-quality optical components such as lenses, prisms and flat surfaces were manufactured. The establishment of the optical production was a big and groundbreaking step for Berliner Glas.

Between 1990 and 1999, the company entered the semiconductor industry and Berliner Glas US was founded in Williamsburg. In the following years the company expanded: in 2000 the takeover of TEGLA Technische Glas Transformations GmbH & Co. KG, Syrgenstein-Landshausen and the takeover of the majority stake in Quarterwave GmbH Berlin, in 2001 the takeover of the majority stake in SwissOptic AG. In 2004 this resulted in the 100% takeover of SwissOptic AG and the integration of Quarterwave GmbH into Berliner Glas. A year later, the majority stake was taken over again, this time in Prinz Optics GmbH and thus the acquisition of the Sol Gel dip coating process.

After the expansion of the Schwäbisch Hall location, Berliner Glas SwissOptic Wuhan was founded in China in 2006 and the TEGLA production facility for glass etching was expanded. In 2008, Prinz Optics GmbH and TEGLA GmbH decided to merge the two companies to form Berliner Glas Surface Technology. A year later, investments were made in the main location in Berlin and the production area was expanded to 27,500 m² with a new building of 8,500 m². In 2017, a new building was purchased in the immediate vicinity. This increased the production area by a further 4,280 m².

In July 2020, the takeover of Berliner Glas by the Dutch semiconductor plant manufacturer ASML was announced.
