Berlin kilometer stone (Minden)
The Berlin kilometer stone in the East Westphalian city of Minden is a small monument that was erected in Minden during the Cold War as a sign of solidarity with the former German capital Berlin , which was then enclosed by the territory of the GDR . It is a listed building .
description
The 60 cm high cube, carved from sandstone, shows the Berlin coat of arms as a relief on the west side above the lettering "Berlin" and the kilometer indication "357 km".
The kilometer indication on the kilometer stone indicates the distance to the former Berlin Dönhoffplatz. The copy of the Prussian “zero milestone” from 1730, which used to stand on Dönhoffplatz , has been standing near this point in Berlin since 1979 on Leipziger Strasse near the Spittelkolonnaden .
The Mindener Stein was erected at the central intersection of the city on the western bank of the Weser Bridge , next to the monument to the Great Elector . Here you drive out of the city on the old Poststrasse in the direction of Berlin.
On July 26, 2013, the stone, as well as the bronze sculpture of the Berlin bear on Berliner Allee / corner Schwabenring in the Rodenbeck district , was entered in part A of the list of monuments of the city of Minden .
background
The Berlin milestones were set up on the initiative of the Berlin Commissioner of the Federal Government, Gerd Bucerius . Bucerius won over the Berlin sculptor Renée Sintenis for the project. It manufactured the stones, and the funding was taken over by a federally funded initiative “Association of Berliners and Friends of Berlin”, which was founded in 1951. She made the stones available to interested communities. The stones were erected from 1954.
The stone solicited interest and humanitarian and economic aid for Berlin.
