Bernadeen Laksahmi Silva née Mendis (* May 20, 1929 ; † February 7, 2007 Modesto / CA ) was a Sri Lankan Roman Catholic sociologist and director of a " Center for Society and Religion " in Colombo .

Life

Her parents were Abraham Albert Mendis and wife Rosalind. After attending primary school, Silva was able to complete a degree in sociology . Through her participation in the religious life of her parish, she came into contact with the specific problems of women in her church and the long-standing forms of misunderstanding and exclusion of women involved in pastoral work and church leadership. Due to her scientific research and the skills she acquired in international exchanges, she became deputy director of the “Center for Society and Religion” in Colombo. Bernadeen Silva believed that women are discriminated against on the basis of their gender alone. She saw serious problems arising from the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church on sexuality . Especially in the clerical assessment of premarital and extramarital relationships, divorces , adultery and contraception , she saw decisive misjudgments of human nature. It worried her that the Catholic Church is distancing itself from positive human perspectives of mutual love, from the need for give and take, which are not only individual but also have a communitarian basis.

She found confirmation in her knowledge and stimulation to spread her conviction in the cooperation with the international Christian Peace Conference (CFK). In 1971 she was the first participant of the IV. All-Christian Peace Assembly (ACFV) convened by the CFK , from which she was elected to the Committee for Continuation of Work (AFA). The V. ACFV elected her to the Presidium of the international CFK, and again to the AFA and the Working Committee (AA). With the VI. ACFV 1985 she became one of the vice-presidents and was part of the presidium.

For years she had her residence in Modesto / California, USA. She had a son Tilak, married to Santhani.
