Bernard Itier (Latin: Bernardus Iterii ; * 1163 ; † 1225 ) was a French clergyman and chronicler in the early 13th century.

life and work

Bernard Itier became a Benedictine monk in the Saint-Martial Abbey of Limoges at the age of 14 and was ordained a priest in 1189 . In 1195 he became a librarian's assistant and in 1199 a succentor , from 1204 he held the post of librarian of the abbey, which he held until his death at the age of 62.

He wrote a chronicle covering the years 1179 to 1225 , which focuses on the regional history of the Limousin and the history of the abbey and the Aquitaine dioceses. As the librarian of Saint-Martial, he worked with Geoffroy du Breuil , to whose chronicle he made some additions. Itier's own chronicle was continued much later by two other monks from Saint-Martial for the years 1272 to 1285.
