Bernard Vincent Rollin
Bernard Vincent Rollin ( 1911 - 1969 ) was a British physicist.
Life
As a student (Bachelor 1933) in 1938 at the Clarendon Laboratory of the University of Oxford with Franz Eugen Simon , Rollin discovered the Rollin effect of thin films of liquid helium, named after him (see superfluidity ). He became a lecturer at Oxford in 1945 and a fellow at Wolfson College in 1967 .
Rollin introduced NMR techniques at the Clarendon Laboratory very early in 1946, immediately after their discovery in the USA . This made him the pioneer of NMR in Great Britain. Rollin built his own NMR spectrometer and published it in Nature in 1946 . His contributions later had problems gaining recognition in wider circles, as he was eccentric and never left Oxford, not even for meetings.
