Bernardino Corio

Bernardino Corio (* 1459 in Milan ; † around 1519 ) was an Italian historian and humanist .

He came from a noble family and devoted himself to philological studies. In 1474 he entered the service of Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza of Milan and after his death (1476) served his son Gian Galeazzo Sforza . Until the reign of Ludovico Sforza , he held various political offices. After his fall, Corio left Milan.

Nothing is known about his further fate or date of death. In any case, he died aged sixty at the time of one of the French occupations of Milan. His historical work remained on the one hand as stylistically inferior, on the other hand as strong in content in the next contemporary memory.

Individual evidence

  1. The historiographical work breaks off in 1494, while the end of the political biography of Paolo Giovio is dated to the time of the fall of Lodovico Sforza in 1499/1500. If Corio had lived to be almost sixty, he would have had to have survived the renewed French occupation of Milan in 1515 - which however had nothing to do with Lodovico Sforza. For the time and circumstances of death with corresponding ambiguity cf. Minonzio, Franco (ed.): Paolo Giovio. Elogi degli uomini illustri, Turin 2006, pp. 169f.
