Bernardo Guimarães

Bernardo Guimarães (born August 15, 1825 in Ouro Preto , Minas Gerais , as Bernardo Joaquim da Silva Guimarães ; †  March 10, 1884 ibid) is a Brazilian novelist.

Guimarães' themes were slavery and its effects on the population, so he wrote the anti-slavery book Escrava Isaura in 1875 , which is now part of the school reading in Brazil and has been filmed several times. The best-known adaptation dates from 1976 and became a great success as Die Sklavin Isaura in 1986, first in Germany and then internationally.

Many of his novels were used as models for telenovelas and feature films, so his novels O Seminarista and O Garimpeiro were also made into films.
