from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernd Kollmann (born November 19, 1946 in Bonn ; † March 12, 2017 in Cologne ) was a photojournalist in Cologne who, as chief photographer for the tabloid newspaper Express in the 1970s and 1980s, took photos of the city's history with a view to Prominence, politics, sport, economy and society documented. In 1971 he and Ernst Geis received the Guardian Prize of the German daily press. It was the first time a tabloid story had won this award.

In 1977 he invented the April Fool's joke based on a photo montage with a polar bear-tiger offspring in Cologne Zoo. The picture shows an assembly by hand with a polar bear who allegedly gave birth to a baby tiger. The picture was the first April Fool's Day joke featured on the Express's front page. He was the only authorized photographer on the balcony at the victory celebration of 1. FC Köln when winning the cup and championship in 1978. His winning photos with Heinz Flohe and Hennes Weisweiler as well as with Hannes Löhr and Toni Schumacher are still hanging in the Rhein-Energie- Stadium and in the Geißbockheim. He also gave Pierre Littbarski a camera so that he could take pictures for him from the cabin for the first time during the 1990 World Cup in Rome.

After working for the Kölner Express, he moved to the Phantasialand amusement park, where he set up the photo shops on the wild water course and in the western town. In four years it made around 1.6 million "clicks" for every boat that passed its camera. In this context, he also invented light barrier photography for the first time. As a result, five million people could then be seen in the photos and the associated 60 kilometers of 35mm color film.

He then worked as a photo journalist for Die Welt and many other daily newspapers. His photos of prominent people in contemporary history have been printed in many magazines ( Stern , Bunte , etc.).

He died of lung cancer in 2017.
