Bernd Kortmann

Bernd Kortmann (born March 22, 1960 in Kaltenkirchen / Holstein) is a German English scholar and linguist .

Career

After receiving his doctorate in 1989 at the University of Hanover and his habilitation in 1994 at the Free University of Berlin , Kortmann became Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Freiburg in 1995 .

He was Dean of the Philological Faculty of the University of Freiburg from 1997 to 1999 and from 2010 to 2014. He was also director of the Master of European Linguistics (now: Linguistics) graduate program from 2004 to 2014. Since 2003 he has been Chairman of the Board of the Language Teaching Center of the University of Freiburg (SLI) and Member of the Board of the Hermann Paul Center of Linguistics. From April 2008 to September 2009 he was a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Language and Literature of the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS). In December 2013 he was appointed director for the humanities and social sciences at FRIAS, and since July 2015 he has been director of the FRIAS.

From 1996 to 1999 he was secretary of the German Society for Linguistics . In 2014 he was elected to the Academia Europaea . In the same year he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Eastern Finland .

Scientific focus

He has researched and published on topics such as semantics, grammaticalization, typology, the history of language and English grammar, including the two-volume reference work A Handbook of Varieties of English , the digital World Atlas of Varieties of English (open access), over 90 articles and reviews and much more more. His research topics include language typology , corpus linguistics and varieties of English in the British Isles.
