Karlfried Knapp

Karlfried Knapp (born July 21, 1946 in Bielefeld ) is a German linguist . From 1993 to 2011 he was Professor of English and Applied Linguistics at the University of Erfurt .

Career

After studying from 1966 to 1971 at the Universities of Bochum , Münster and Edinburgh and passing the state examination in 1971, Karlfried Knapp received his doctorate in 1977 with the thesis teaching sequences in foreign language teaching in the subjects of theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics and sociology at the University of Konstanz. In 1988 he received his doctorate the "Trainer in Transnational Business" certificate from the Intercultural Communication Institute, Portland, Oregon, USA. In 1992 he completed his habilitation in English Philology / Linguistics at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf with his thesis on Linguistic Aspects of Intercultural Communication Skills .

From 1975 to 1981 he was a research assistant at the chair for senior English studies at the University of Düsseldorf, later at the same institution as a university assistant for English linguistics (1981 to 1987) and research assistant (1987 to 1991). He then worked as a trainer at the Institute for Intercultural Communication in Aachen , which he co-founded.

In 1994 he was appointed full professor at the University of Education, later at the University of Erfurt. Before that, he had already held a professorship in Wuppertal (1984), Essen (1985), Marburg (1989/90) and Tübingen (1991/92). He headed the language center at the University of Erfurt for 15 years.

From 2000 to 2002 he was Vice President of the Society for Applied Linguistics (GAL), from 2002 to 2008 Secretary General of the Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée (AILA). In 2011 Karlfried Knapp was made an honorary member at the 16th World Congress of the Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée (AILA) in Beijing. In 2016 the Society for Applied Linguistics also made him an honorary member.
