Bernd Krimmel (born June 15, 1926 in Darmstadt ) is a German painter, draftsman and cultural politician .

Life

Bernd Krimmel was born in Darmstadt in June 1926 as the third child of the Reichsbahn official Bernhard Krimmel and his wife Hanna geb. Born Kraus. Krimmel spent the first ten years of his life in what was then Blumenthal-Strasse and the corner of Pallaswiesenstrasse in the Johannesviertel . When he was nine, Krimmel received modeling lessons from Luise Federn-Staudinger . He graduated from high school at Easter 1944 at the Liebig secondary school in his hometown. He then began to study architecture in the summer semester of 1944 at the TH Darmstadt until it closed in March 1945. At the TH he attended events on art history and worked for the sculptor Hermann Geibel . Then he worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist. As a 19-year-old he was self-taught as a quick draftsman in the American red cross Club in Darmstadt . At the request of GIs , he portrayed a. a. Presidents, generals and movie stars.

Krimmel established himself as an autodidact and had his first exhibition as early as 1946, which took place in the Municipal Museum in Mainz. Numerous other solo and group exhibitions followed. From 1951 to 1960 he regularly took part in the Great German Art Exhibition in the Haus der Kunst in Munich .

He earned his living u. a. with avant-garde art in the building, including a house facade he designed in 1957 on a student residence at Schlossgartenstrasse 1 in Darmstadt. In the 1950s and early 1960s Krimmel did a lot of work for schools, kindergartens and children's clinics and also illustrated school books.

With the support of Heinz Winfried Sabais , who took over the office of cultural advisor for the city of Darmstadt in 1954, Krimmel developed numerous initiatives that had a lasting impact on artistic life in Darmstadt and the region. From 1955 to 1960 he was managing director of the New Darmstadt Secession founded in 1945 . In 1955 he organized the first exhibition “Art in Architecture” on Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt.

In 1965 Krimmel was appointed municipal cultural advisor in Darmstadt. From 1968 to 1971 he was also a visiting lecturer at the State University of Design in Mainz. In 1972 he became director of the Darmstadt City Museum. He was able to develop this into an independent institute at Mathildenhöhe . A structural analysis of the city's cultural budget led to a reform of the city's cultural policy. In 1975 he became director of the newly founded Mathildenhöhe Institute and the municipal art collections. In this function, he has planned and designed numerous exhibitions in different areas of national and international art. He held the office of director of the Mathildenhöhe Institute until 1989. As a result of the ongoing arguments with Mayor Günther Metzger , who had been in office since 1981 , Krimmel was transferred to an early retirement from the public service on June 15, 1989.

After his departure, he intensified his own artistic activities and also took part in exhibitions.

In 2010 Bernd Krimmel got involved in the citizens' initiative "SOS Mathildenhöhe". In the association's specialist forums, Krimmel spoke out against the planned construction of the Sander Museum on the site of the former Christiansen house on the eastern slope of Mathildenhöhe.

Bernd Krimmel was married to Suzanne Krimmel for the first time in 1956. The marriage resulted in two daughters and a son. In his second marriage he has been with the art historian Elisabeth Krimmel born in 1970 . Decker married. The second marriage resulted in a daughter.
