Bernd Overwien

Bernd Overwien (born December 15, 1953 in Haltern , today Haltern am See) was professor for political didactics at the University of Kassel from 1/2008 to 09/2019 .

Life

After training as a high-voltage electrician in Marl-Hüls and then working as an electrician in Berlin , Overwien graduated from secondary school and passed the secondary school diploma . As a scholarship holder of the Hans Böckler Foundation of the DGB , he completed his teaching degree for the subjects of technology / industrial studies and social studies and then worked in vocational training. He passed his master's degree in educational science and technology / work theory. Since 1989 he has been a research assistant and research assistant at the TU Berlin . There he headed the “Global Learning and International Cooperation Unit” until the end of 2007.

The doctoral thesis dealt with the acquisition of professional skills and employment in the urban informal sector in Nicaragua using the example of the Barrio July 19, Managua (1995) . His habilitation at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg dealt with the topic of informal learning, theoretical discussion and research approaches (2001) . In 2005 he completed his habilitation at FU Berlin .

In 2008 Overwien took up the chair in "Didactics of Political Education" at the University of Kassel. His work focuses on civic education for sustainable development / global learning, the connection of informal and formal forms of learning in civic education and, in this context, also the cooperation of school and extracurricular education. Bernd Overwien is a liaison professor at the Hans Böckler Foundation. He is committed to the internationalization of research and teaching. Research and study stays as well as excursions with students went to Nicaragua, Spain, Argentina, Cameroon; Malawi, Bolivia, USA, Canada, Ethiopia, Cuba, Israel, Ecuador, Colombia and Switzerland.

Overwien was Dean of Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Kassel from 2010 to 2013. From 2015 to 2018 he was a member of the university's Senate. From 2009 to 2019 he was chairman of the Hessian German Association for Political Education (DVPB)
