Life

Ruf attended the Waldorf School in Pforzheim, where he graduated from high school in 1974. Even when he was still at school, he wanted to found a Waldorf school in his native city, which is why he joined the founding group of the Free Waldorf School in Karlsruhe in 1973. The school opened four years later. Bernd Ruf studied history and German at the same time from 1974–1980 at the University of Mannheim, where he passed both state examinations for teaching at grammar schools in 1980 and 1982. He completed his legal clerkship from 1981 to 1982 at the Bismarck High School in Karlsruhe and at the Karlsbad Education Center. This was followed by training as a specialist in history and German at the Free University of Stuttgart from 1982–1983 and a year-long activity at the Free Waldorf School in Kiel. From 1983 Bernd Ruf was a class supervisor and specialist teacher at the Free Waldorf School in Karlsruhe for 20 years.

Emergency pedagogical work in the refugee camp in Iraq

In 1987 Bernd Ruf was elected to the executive board of the non-profit association Friends of Waldorf Education . Since then he has been leading the association with Nana Göbel, he in Karlsruhe, she in Berlin. From Karlsruhe, Bernd Ruf expanded his activities worldwide over the years. The association grew and began to network internationally, to develop its support internationally. Since 1993 the development of the voluntary service has been part of the association. In cooperation with the BMFSFJ and BMZ, the “Friends” now send around 1,600 volunteers every year and provide them with educational support. With the turning point in the 1990s and the opening of the East, another region was added for the Waldorf movement. Bernd Ruf was executive director of the International Association for Waldorf Education in Central and Eastern Europe and other Eastern countries from 1993-2011 and during this time actively supported the spread of Waldorf education and anthroposophy in Eastern Europe. During these years some schools and kindergartens were built. During his teaching activities at the Waldorf School in Karlsruhe, this was named the first UNESCO school and the "Friends" were invited to the International Conference for Education in Geneva in 1994 to present Waldorf education to an international audience in a large exhibition. As a result, the network grew even stronger, the association grew and spread its commitment worldwide. The cooperation with UNESCO was continued and in May 2001 the association became a foundation with official relations with UNESCO.

In 1999 Bernd Ruf was appointed founding director of the Parzival schools in Karlsruhe. In the following year, he continued his education and completed a postgraduate course in special education and in the fields of behavioral education and education for people with learning disabilities at the Ludwigsburg / Reutlingen University of Education. In 2002 he completed this with the state examination for teaching at special schools. Since 2003 he has been the headmaster and class teacher at the Parzival-Zentrum Karlsruhe and has been teaching there ever since, with a special focus on the “intensive classes” in which conspicuous young people are taught. Today the center comprises five schools, a school for educational assistance and a special education school with a work level, as well as a Waldorf kindergarten and an integrative crèche. Rescuing refugees on Lesbos

In the summer of 2006, the foundation stone was laid for another area of responsibility Bernd Rufs: emergency pedagogy. While about 20 disabled young people from Beirut are visiting the UNESCO Peace Festival in Stuttgart, the war in Lebanon broke out. At the insistence of the families, who wanted the young people to return home despite the warlike circumstances, Ruf and employees of the friends accompanied the young people home. After the return trip, they were awaited by the collateral damage of political interests, and especially in the refugee camps, disturbed and traumatized children. From this, the special education teacher Ruf developed a concept of emergency education, based on Waldorf education. Since then, he and his staff have been helping children and young people around the world in war zones and areas hit by natural disasters, in China, Indonesia, Japan, Latin America, Gaza, Kyrgyzstan, Kurdistan-Iraq, Nepal, Lebanon, Kenya, Ecuador, the Philippines, Colombia, but also Brussels , Paris and also in Germany. In 2008, the severe Sichuan earthquake required work with hundreds of psycho-traumatized children, parents and teachers at the epicenter. Inquiries to train more employees in emergency pedagogy and crisis interventions increased, the area of responsibility grew, so that in 2010 Ruf founded the competence center for emergency pedagogical crisis intervention at the Parzival Center in Karlsruhe and is still in charge today.

Since 2009 Ruf has held emergency educational training events for teachers in public school districts in Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Kenya, Japan, Philippines, China, Gaza Strip, Northern Iraq and the USA. In October 2016, he founded the Free International Institute for Emergency and Trauma Education (IINTP) in Karlsruhe with employees from emergency pedagogy and anthroposophic doctors. Since May 2017, further training in trauma education has been taking place there every year. Bernd Ruf holds seminars and lectures here as a lecturer. The worldwide association of emergency pedagogy was essentially initiated at the 2017 conference in a network meeting with international groups. The joint framework agreement was ceremoniously signed at the 2019 Annual Emergency Pedagogy Conference. All groups work on the basis of a common model as well as the emergency pedagogical concept and guidelines. New international groups usually arise after an emergency response (or after seminars) to continue the work on site.
