Bernd Schäfer III. (Born September 28, 1937 ; † January 28, 2010 ) was a German lawyer and sports official. He was a co-founder of the Kölner Haie ice hockey club and the German ice hockey league , in which he held the post of managing director from 1996 to 2000 .

Career

The Cologne lawyer was a founding member of the Cologne EC in 1972, later called Kölner Haien , which he took over as interim president in March 1994 and saved from bankruptcy with an extensive restructuring concept . Schäfer was later appointed honorary president by the KEC.

In 1994 Schäfer was also one of the founding members of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL), on whose supervisory board he initially sat and of which he took over the post of managing director in 1996. During his tenure, he came under fire for TV contracts with the media entrepreneur Leo Kirch and the complete opening of the league to foreign players after the Bosman ruling and was finally replaced by Gernot Tripcke in the spring of 2000 .

Bernd Schäfer III., Who ran a law firm in Cologne's Heumarkt until his death , died on January 28, 2010 at the age of 72.
