Bernd Strauss

Bernd Strauss (* 1959 ) is a German sports psychologist and university professor .

Life

Strauss studied psychology  at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel from 1979 to 1987 and then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Sport and Sport Science. In 1987 he obtained his diploma and in 1992 his doctorate (subject: “Confusions in complex problem solving”), in 1998 Strauss completed his habilitation with Herbert Haag (subject: “The influence of sports spectators on sports performance”).

In 1998 Strauss took up a professorship for sports psychology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University (WWU) in Münster. From 2001 to 2006 and from 2008 to 2010 he was the dean of the “Psychology and Sports Science” department. In 2009, he also became a representative for top-class sport at the University of Münster.

In the spring and summer of 2011, Strauss was a visiting professor at the University of Vienna and in February 2015 at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia  .

From 2003 to 2009 Strauss was the chairman of the German Association for Sports Science (DVS) and was awarded the DVS Golden Badge of Honor in 2012. In May 2013 he was elected chairman of the Working Group for Sport Psychology in Germany and re-elected in 2015 and 2017. In September 2019, Strauss was made an honorary member of the German Association for Sports Science.

From 2001 to 2004 Strauss was the managing editor of the magazine for sport psychology. In May 2017 he became chairman of the PotAS commission (potential analysis), which was appointed by the German Olympic Sports Confederation and the Federal Ministry of the Interior as a "central element in the top-class sports reform" in order to evaluate "the eligibility of German sports associations and top athletes". In August 2017, Strauss resigned from this office for health reasons.

His research activities focus on the subject areas “Expertise in Sport”, “Social-Psychological Aspects of Sport” and research methods. In addition, he dealt with the connections between sport and the media, sports reporting and the topic of sports viewers. Together with Herbert Haag and Michael Kolb , he published the volume “Data analysis in sports science: hermeneutical and statistical methods” in the framework of the series “Fundamentals for studying sports science” in 2003.

In 2009 and 2010 he headed the research project "Evaluation and further development of the talent screening concept of the German Handball Federation" and in 2011 "Support for the talent screening measures of the German Handball Federation" In addition, there were other research projects in which handicapped dressage riders at competitions ( Paralympic Games , World Equestrian Games ) were accompanied by sports psychology.
