Bernd Werle

Bernd Werle SVD (born June 9, 1955 in Baumholder ) is a German religious and Roman Catholic theologian .

Life

Bernd Werle grew up in Rohrbach and graduated from high school in 1974 at the Sankt Wendel Mission School in Saarland . He then joined the religious order of the Steyler Missionaries and in 1980 made his perpetual vows . After studying theology he received in the Church of the February 15, 1981 Mission Seminary St. Augustine the priesthood . In 1982 he completed a licentiate in mission theology. From 1983 to 1992 he worked as a missionary in Togo , then from 1994 to 2004 as a chaplain in the parish of St. Mary's Visitation in Sankt Augustin-Mülldorf . In 2001 he was in moral theologian with the work on ethics in the context of culture at the University of Bonn doctorate and taught as a professor of moral theology. Until 2007 he was Vice-Rector of the Philosophical-Theological University SVD St. Augustin .

Since 2004 he has headed the North German Province of the Steyler Missionaries and was elected Provincial of the joint German Province on May 1, 2007 after the two German provinces were unified. In 2009 he was re-elected until 2013. From 2014 he was Professor of Moral Theology at the Philosophical-Theological College of the Steyler Missionaries in St. Augustin, where he became Rector on February 7, 2014. His main research interests are Christian-theological ethics in Africa, missionary spirituality, internationalization and interculturality in religious communities and ethical challenges in changing cultures.

Since July 1, 2018, he has been parish vicar in the pastoral care area Sankt Augustin with his residence in Mülldorf .
