Bernhard "Beni" Berset

Bernhard "Beni" Berset (born before 1984), the Swiss chief test pilot at the Armasuisse and a pilot in the Swiss Air Force . He is a career officer with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Chief Air Defense (CAD) of the militia .

Life

Berset began his aviation career with glider courses from the FVS pre-flight training course . After completing the pilot recruiting school and certification in 1984, he was assigned to an F-5 militia squadron. He studied physics at the ETH Zurich and then flew for a few years as co-pilot at Swissair before moving to Armasuisse as a test pilot in 1995 . During this time he moved to the Air Force for Fliegerstaffel 18 .

Berset works as a chief test pilot at Armasuisse at the Emmen military airfield . He is responsible for test flights for updates with the F-5E, F-5F, F / A-18C (mostly with the J-5001) and F / A-18D (mostly the J-5232). He was also involved in weapon tests such as the guided missile shooting of the AIM-9 X Sidewinder in China Lake from April 2 to December 15, 2007 on target display drones (including the QF-4 ). He is responsible for evaluation flights with aircraft that are available for procurement for the Swiss Air Force. In addition, he carries out FLORAKO calibration flights with the PC-12 HB-FOG from Armasuisse and test flights with the Diamond DA42 Centaur OPA R-711 in order to develop procedures for the use of unmanned aircraft in mixed airspace. Bernhard Berset also acted as chief test pilot for the evaluation of a successor aircraft for the F-5. In this role he tested the Gripen , Rafale and Eurofighter . In view of the planned procurement of the Gripen, he continued the test and integration flights for the new Gripen E from the Swiss side. Before the federal vote on the procurement of the Gripen , he gave various lectures on the subject. The debate about the tests and the procurement discussion received a lot of media attention in Switzerland, and international military aviation media also followed his work with interest.

In his militia function, he works as Chief Air Defense in the air force operations center at the Dübendorf military airfield . As a fighter jet pilot, he flies the F / A-18 Hornet for Fliegerstaffel 18 at the Payerne military airfield .

He is married and lives in Neuenkirch .

During his training, he completed his training as a fighter pilot on the Pilatus PC-7 and de Havilland DH.100 Vampire aircraft . During his training as a test pilot, he flew the Mirage 2000 in France .

In his role as a professional military pilot, he currently flies the following types of aircraft in the Swiss Air Force: Pilatus PC-7 , Pilatus PC-9 , F-5E , F-5F, F / A-18 C and F / A-18D.

At Armasuisse he flies the Pilatus PC-6 Turboporter, Diamond DA42 OPA, Pilatus PC-12 , F-5E , F-5F, F / A-18 C and F / A-18D.

For the evaluations he flew the following aircraft: C-27J Spartan, Falcon 900 , C-295 , Rafale , Eurofighter and JAS-39 (before the referendum against the procurement of the Saab Gripen, he flew all Gripen versions Jas-39A, Jas-39B , Jas-39C, Jas-39D and Jas-39 NG / F).
