Bern (h) ard Heilig (born September 21, 1902 in Proßnitz , Austria-Hungary ; † June 28, 1943 in the Lodz / Litzmannstadt ghetto ) was a German-Czech economist and historian.

life and work

After graduating from high school in 1920, Bernhard Heilig attended the Czech Commercial Academy for one year, worked in business until 1923 and studied economics in Nuremberg and Basel, where he received his doctorate in 1927. He then worked as a freelance academic writer in Paris and Vienna and finally left Austria. Before Czechoslovakia was broken up , he worked for several newspapers and magazines. Among other things, in the Prague self-defense he published his economic-historical commentaries. In his numerous studies he devoted himself to the economic history of the Jews of Western Europe, but above all to the development of the textile industry in Moravia.

On October 21, 1941, he and his wife Vera were deported from Prague to the Lodz / Litzmannstadt ghetto. There he found employment in the statistical department of the archive in February and co-authored, among other things, The Chronicle of the Lodz / Litzmannstadt Ghetto and the “Encyclopedia”. Heilig fell ill with tuberculosis in 1943 and died that same year. He was buried in the Marysin cemetery.

The sources of Bernhard Heilig are tighter than that of the other German editors of the “Ghetto Chronicle” such as Oskar Rosenfeld or Oskar Singer . The author's work has also not been researched.
