Bernhard Herschel

Bernhard Herschel (born December 23, 1837 in Emmerich , † October 20, 1905 in Mannheim ) was a German businessman and Mannheim city councilor.

Bernhard Herschel was the youngest son of from Amersfoort originating Jewish born businessman Simon Isaiah Herschel and Herschel Minna, Moses. In 1861 he and his brother-in-law Enthoven founded a tobacco wholesaler in Amsterdam . In 1865 the company opened an office through Bernhard Herschel in the traditionally important trading and inland port city of Mannheim in the international tobacco business . Since 1872, the company has been located in the stately property B1.5 on Breiten Straße , which was acquired by Herschel at the time . Shortly before his death, he donated half a million gold marks for the construction of a swimming pool, the Herschelbad .

Herschel was a member of the Freemason Lodge Carl zur Eintracht in Mannheim, he was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Mannheim .
